Beyond Miracles – Beyond Magic
What a gift cancer continues to be. Though I am tumor free, I am not void of the memory of having active, full blown cancer and all the Iatrogenic diseases that become a larger part of the equation. I recall the emotional turbulence as a result of the diagnosis of cancer. This diagnosis reaches beyond the patient like the domino effect. Cancer knows no exclusivity as it ripples across the emotional, intellectual, subtle and spiritual body’s of our spouses, our children, our friends, community and loved ones. Unimaginable, cancer roars it’s ugly head through all seasons of our lives, unpredictable, uncertainty is the only road we roam. There is no map, no destination – only hope for the restoration of health and a sense of well being for the whole family. Personally, I imagine most cancer patients desire to become part of the survival statistics, that 5-10 percent of people who are cancer free. To enhance the probability of our healing, we have to focus on becoming part of this small percentage of survivors; and say, why not me? We have to change our mind-set and become a different part of the equation, the part that survives and thrives.
The long journey is unpaved, a narrow road and filled with pebbles, pot holes, that has no yellow lines leaving us with feelings of worry and concern. With cancer, the whole family, tribe, and community embraces the unknown, something we’re not use to dealing with. We humans try so hard to be in control with our to do lists, tomorrow’s events. Cancer teaches to let go and let God lead. In essence, this is where words like FAITH, HOPE, INSPIRATION, and EXAMPLES feed our spirits, bridging us beyond statistics. Though we continue to barter and change, we express and expose parts of our selves that we had previously hidden, all for survivorship. Ah, the translucency of spirt.
In reality; all the bartering, investigation, change, and support will not guarantee survival. The only thing that is known, is the unknown. This is a state of being where everything becomes magical, a mystery and your view of life profoundly changes. A survivor, lives in a constant state of detachment, feelings buoy up to the surface when we hear about someone else’s struggle, and we are once again faced with the same old fears and memories. Having the experience of cancer helps you see and feel things that you never noticed before. The people who care for you and love you develop a greater sense of appreciation and recognize things about you, and themselves they would have never experienced without the diagnosis.
My passion, my desire is to unite all the caregivers, friends, family and patients, regardless of their kind of cancer, their prognosis and celebrate this gift we receive called life. I want to house a safe haven and be a host, a conduit, to the realm of the unknown, providing education, creative expression, encouraging others to take the time to smell the flowers, hear the music within, and live in spirit. I am in the midst of developing a special foundation to enhance the lives of all peoples who are facing the dragon, and need your stories, armor and support. Remember, community builds your immunity and has the potential to heal.
As much as I try to push back the memory of active disease, a life of struggle, I am constantly reminded of this journey we call cancer. I’m choosing to write about this subject, not as a reminder of the past, but to encourage others who are facing this journey. I have been reminded of this difficult journey three times this week, a 15 year old boy in my community has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. A lovely 29 year woman who’s malignant melanoma returned to her brain after 8 years of silence, and yes even the untimely death of a 26 year old young man who suffered deeply and ultimately died from complications of stomach cancer. The deepest part of me wishes to abolish this horrible disease, as I dream of a life of no suffering. These stories propel me into action, and I deeply desire to give back to my ever growing community. I wish you and your loved ones joy, and laughter, acceptance, and a fulfilling life. Make peace with uncertainty, share your hope, live your dreams. Be part of the healing equation and gift the world your story, inspire others. Together we are whole and healed, united and unlimited in our potential to change the statistics. Live a life of Yes WE Can, and watch your world change as you share your stories.
